Swimming Carnival 2020

Our annual Swimming Carnival took place on Monday 17th February at Katoomba Pool. After the rainy weather forced the cancellation of our original date, the weather managed to (mostly!) hold off on the day.

The carnival was the perfect way to welcome our Year 7 students to the excitement and festivities of Springwood High and it was wonderful to see so many Year 7 students embracing the spirit. A special thanks to our senior students who decorated the venue, donned amazing costumes and fostered school spirit throughout the day. Out senior Entertainment class also showed off their skills providing great music throughout the day.

Looking forward to coming together again as a school for our Athletics Carnival on Thursday 7th May (Term 2 Week 2)

2019 HSC Excellence for Springwood High

Springwood High School takes pride in being a school for all, and is the top ranked school, public or private, in the Blue Mountains in 2019.

“Our teachers deserve to be recognised and praised. We are a public comprehensive school, and proud to be inclusive and wide-ranging in our curriculum and in advancing our students’ possibilities in life,” says principal Dr Mark Howie. “This is evident in our 2019 HSC results. It is a humbling experience to be the top ranked school in the Blue Mountains this year, and to have been publicly recognised and lauded for the consistent improvement in HSC results that has been evident over the last 4 years. We applaud the achievements of our students in the HSC, and congratulate and thank their parents and carers for their support. We are also grateful for the P&C’s wonderful support and advocacy for our students and school.”

Individual highlights include two students being recognised as ‘Top Achievers’ by the NSW Educational Standards Authority. McKenna Dimmock placed 5^th in the state in Community and Family Studies and Miya Chesterman placed 3^rd in the state in German Beginners, which she studied through the Dubbo School of Distance Education. Miya and Emily Pickering have both been recognised as an HSC ‘All-round Achiever’, having achieved a result in the highest band possible (Band 6 or Band E4) in 10 or more units of study.

Mara Lee-Griswold was selected for the ‘Texstyle’ annual exhibition of outstanding HSC Major Textiles Projects. Max Ogle and Gabriel Frechtling had their individual performances nominated for ONSTAGE, the annual presentation of exemplary works from the Drama HSC. Miya Chesterman’s music composition was nominated for ENCORE, a showcase for outstanding HSC Music students, and she will be cited on the online program for this showcase for her exemplary viva voce.

The school received 36 mentions on the Distinguished Achievers List, encompassing the achievements of 22 students across 18 subjects, which attests to the range and depth of students’ achievements across the curriculum.

Outstanding ATAR scores were achieved by Emily Pickering, 98.75; Miya Chesterman, 97.55; McKenna Dimmock, 96.80; Scott Waddell, 92.85; James Grant, 91.10; Isabella Henderson, 90.75; and Hannah Travers, 89.4.

The school’s 3+3 Compacted Curriculum model for HSC delivery means the distinguished achievers may have been completing their first or their second year of HSC exams. Completing their first three subjects and exams, Natasha Mann and Maya Costa achieved Band 6 results in two of their three subjects, meaning they received marks of 90 or more. “Very notable in this year’s results,” says Dr Howie, “is that four students achieved Band 6 results in both Visual Arts and Textiles and Design, both subjects in which students complete and submit a major project, as well as sit a written exam. This attests to the students’ developing project management skills, their creativity and application, and the exemplary teaching they experienced.”

The school’s academic achievements in 2019 have extended beyond the HSC.

“In recent weeks we have learned that our exemplary Year 9 students outperformed the nation’s best in the PISA reading and scientific literacy components. Such results carried through to NAPLAN with our percentage of Year 9 placing in the top 2 bands for reading and numeracy being commended and bettering ‘like’ schools.”

“Our best wishes go to our students as they move to the next stages in their lives, and we honour the wonderful support of their families and our inspiring school community,” said Dr Howie.

As our school year draws to a close, we must acknowledge the immense hard work on one crucial part of our school community – our amazing Springwood High School P&C.

This wonderful group of people, not all of whom are pictured, continue to volunteer their time and energy to improve our school for both students and staff. This year, they have relentlessly researched, made grant applications and consulted with a range of stakeholders to support increasing air-conditioning across our school. They have generously sponsored many awards at our Presentation Evening to reward the efforts of students in a range of fields and initiatives. They have also continued to be the greatest cheerleaders for our student performers – sponsoring the band program and our upcoming musical, Matilda. Our school is very fortunate to have such an active and innovative P&C and we thank them for their unwavering support and commitment.

Just one part of this program will have Dylan completing training in Penrith at 6am, then putting in a full day of school! An amazing commitment to his chosen sport. We are very proud of Dylan!

Year 9 Camp 2019

Year 9 students, accompanied by four very committed teachers, attended the Outdoor Education Camp in Morriset this week. During their time away they were physically challenged by canoeing, high ropes, abseiling and a hotly contested Teachers v Students Challenge Night! It was a fantastic three days away filled with lots of laughter and camaraderie.

This month, a group of Year 9 and 10 Duke of Edinburgh candidates completed the Wollengambe Crater walk. Although only 10km, it was a hard and hot walk with tough terrain. Well done to our students and a big thanks to Ms Rooney and Greg Watson from MYST who accompanied the students.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Congratulations to Edie Winslow (Year 10) who has been selected as a Junior Ambassador to represent the Blue Mountains at Sanda City Japan, as part of the Blue Mountains City Council Sister Cities program.

In addition to that, Edie will also be completing a 2-month exchange program in Yokohama City. We are very proud of Edie and excited for her upcoming adventures!

Upon returning to Australia, Edie will begin her HSC studies in Japanese Beginners with lots of first-hand experience!

Wear It Purple Day

SASS Appreciation Week

This week is SASS Appreciation Week, where we acknowledge and celebrate the vital role our School Administrate Support Staff play in our school. From the day-to-day running of the administrative demands of a high school, to being the first point of contact for parents over the phone, to dealing with many people who come through the office each day, to caring for our students in Sick Bay and through their endless support of the teachers in infinite ways there is certainly a lot appreciate! Our whole school marked NAIDOC with an assembly in Week 8, featuring the hilariously entertaining Sean Cchoolburra. What a hugely entertaining assembly that had the staff and students in stitches for his full comedy set. Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

UNSW Indigenous Winter School Program

The week-long residential program includes an introduction to tertiary studies in the discipline area of their choice, while also experiencing university life along with indigenous students from across Australia.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Zero Waste at SHS

Each week our school’s motivated Zero Waste team collect paper from around the school to be recycled. With 15 collections points situated around the school there is a lot of paper to be collected and deposited into the paper and cardboard dumpster. The dumpster takes a fortnight to fill and is then collected by the recycling company.

Whilst students generally place their rubbish into the appropriate recycling bin. Sometimes errors are made and one final check is done to remove any incorrect material. Students achieve this important task in approximately 10 minutes before the start of classes.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Shave for a Cure Update

Our school's support of the Shave for a Cure fundraiser has culminated in three staff members also joining the cause! Deputy Principal Ms Dean, Year 9 Advisor Mr Mah, and Maths teacher Mr Afshar bravely had their heads shaved in front of a student audience who generously contributed to the Leukaemia Foundation. They join Eva Roberts, Jelly Costa, Olivia Dalby and Kate Pankhurst who shaved their heads in March, raising $5828.

Thank you to all who gave generously to this important cause close to the heart of our school community.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

International Women's Day

EXPO 2019

Springwood High School welcomed over 200 primary students from Springwood Public School, Faulconbridge Public School, Hazelbrook Public School, Lawson Public School and other local schools to our 2019 EXPO Day and Night events. This fantastic and large scale event involved taster lessons, a concert, lunch catered by senior Hospitality and the chance to explore the grounds of our school for the first time.

A big thank you to our students who were at the heart of this event. The SRC very ably led students and teachers around to their taster lessons, Hospitality outdid themselves with their yummy catering and our Tech Team showcased their professionalism in running a wonderful concert with highly entertaining performances.

We look forwarding to welcoming many students back to our school for Orientation Day in Term 4.

Follow your heart, not the herd

Shave for a Cure Fundraiser

A Cooler School for Springwood High

Our summers are getting hotter... and so are our kids' classrooms. The NSW Government's Cooler Classrooms initiative offers air conditioning to schools affected by excessive heat but while some Mountains schools are benefiting, so far Springwood High School (SHS) has been excluded.

The SHS P&C, with assistance from experts at Western Sydney University, are working on a plan to change this and we need your help and support.

2018 HSC Results

Individual highlights include Charlotte Hitchcock who received four Band 6s and two Band 5s; Tahlia Curley who received four Band 6s and one Band 5; Georgia Marks who received three Band 6s and two Band 5s as well as Ella Howie and Morgaine Sharpe who each received two Band 6s and four Band 5s.

Outstanding ATAR scores were achieved by Charlotte Hitchcock 97.9; Tahlia Curley 97.8; Georgia Marks 95.8; Hayden Fisher 90.5; and Ella Howie 90.3. The school had a host of students achieve 85 or more, including Michael Witherow, Caitlin Stratford and Morgaine Sharp.

The school received a total of 122 Band 5 and 6 results, encompassing the achievements of 66 students across all of the HSC subjects taught at the School.

The school’s 3+3 Compacted Curriculum model for HSC delivery means the top and distinguished achievers may have been completing their first or their second year of HSC exams. For their first year of HSC studies, outstanding results were achieved by Miya Chesterman who achieved three Band 6s along with Emily Pickering, McKenna Dimmock and James Grant each receiving two Band 6s.

Deputy principal, Todd Shepherd, said “that in addition to seeing the students everyday under the 3+3 structure, the teaching staff of Springwood High School worked back late, gave up weekends to run tutorials and workshops and worked through half of their holidays in July and October in order to provide advice, support and opportunities for students’ to consolidate their learning, in preparation for the HSC”.

“We are a public comprehensive school, and proud to be comprehensive in advancing our students’ learning, wellbeing and possibilities in life,” said principal, Dr Mark Howie. “This is evident in our 2018 HSC results and we applaud the achievements of students in the HSC and the full scope of school life.”

2018 Debating Success

Our Year 8 debating team have been declared winners of the Blue Mountains Debating Competition for 2018 for their year group, defeating Winmalee High in the grand final on Thursday 29^th November. The topic was “That childhood has lost its magic” and debaters were given only one hour to prepare their winning arguments.

All of our year group teams were highly successful over the course of the competition. Year 7 debaters were announced as runners-up for their year group after also participating in a the one-hour prep grand final. A second Year 8 team also achieved close results in their debates over the year, gaining valuable experience in the process. Our Year 10 team performed exceptionally well, showing the maturity and skills they have achieved over the past four years of debating and the countless wins, only just missing out on the grand final debate in a fierce battle of wits over the year.

As senior students for 2019/20, our Year 10 team will now put debating aside to concentrate on their studies, where we hope the skills and confidence gained will be put to good use. We wish them the best and thank them for their input into workshops and peer feedback over the years.

Debating is a wonderful activity that augments school learning and helps extend all students in their skills and knowledge. Learning how to prepare and debate a topic, regardless of your actual opinion, provides opportunities for students to grow in teamwork as well as develop and improve speaking and listening skills. Students learn to formulate arguments, provide evidence, expand on ideas and use rhetorical skills to convince audiences.

All students are welcome to join debating, and the 2019 competition will commence early in Term One.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY CHANGES FOR SEMESTER 2 2018

At SHS, there will not be a SDD on Monday, 23^rd July, the start of Term 3 after the school holidays. Staff and students return to begin Term 3 on Monday, 23^rd July, which will be a normal school day, following the usual timetable for Week A.

With the approval of our Director, Public Schools NSW we will still run a SDD, as we are required to do.

This SDD will now take place in Term 4 on Monday, 19^th November. This not a normal school day and timetabled classes will not be operational. Students are not required to attend school on Monday, 19^th November. This is Week 6 of Term 4, and so the start of the new school year here at Springwood HS. Students will return to school on Tuesday, 20^th November. On this day Yr 7 will start Yr 8, Yr 8 will start Yr 9, Yr 9 will start Yr 10, Yr 10 will start SY1, and SY1 students return from their HSC examinations to begin SY2.

A note about these changes was sent home with students on Friday, 22/6/18.

Ubuntu African Children's Choir

Ubuntu African Children's Choir returned to Springwood High in Term 2, bringing their enegry and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of our school community. The choir performed for the whole school at assembly, and over 100 students signed up for an additional workshop.

Ella was awarded the Harding Miller Scholarship, a significant and sought after award which will support her to complete her schooling and move into her desired post-school directions in further study and work. The Harding Miller Foundation is dedicated to assisting young women to fulfill their potential, as this strengthens our communities and the nation.

Jessica was awarded the GO Foundation scholarship, which will support her aspiration to compelete her HSC and go on to study social work at university, enabling her to work in support of Aboriginal people and communities. Founded by Adam Goodes and Michael O'Loughlin, this prestigius award is driven by the need to 'close the gap' for Aboriginal people in education and employment. It is a fitting recognition of Jessica's pride in her Aboriginal identity and culture.

It is most exciting that two of our students, Jessica Johnson (Senior Year 1) and Ella Newton (Year 9), have been recognised at the 2018 Public Education Foundation Awards, winning prestigious scholarships that will assist them through to the completion of the HSC and then on to their desired post-school pathways.

These scholarships can help to make dreams come true. To have won them is a fitting tribute to the girls for their commitment and resilience, to those closest to them for the loving care they provide, and to the school staff, particularly Ms Jan Mason, for the unwavering support directed to the girls' learning and wellbeing.

Jess won the GO Foundation Scholarship. Founded by Adam Goodes and Michael O'Loughlin, the GO Foundation works to empower Indigenous Australian youth to change their own lives, and to support them in doing so on their journey from school to employment.

Ella won the Harding Miller Education Foundation Scholarship. Founded on the passionate belief that the education and success of girls will lead to a more prosperous and responsible society, this scholarship supports and enables girls to achieve their full educational potential.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE ATAR

The University Admissions Centre (UAC) believes that there has been lots of media attention on the ATAR recently, and not all of the commentary has been accurate and well-informed.

Dr Rod Yager, Chair of the Technical Committee on Scaling, which is responsible for calculating ATARs, says recent commentary overlooks evidence that students who choose the more demanding Maths and English options get higher ATARs than those who choose the easier options.

The following text is from a UAC media release outlining Dr Yager's thoughts and comments on this topic.

"YOU can't [game the HSC], says the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

The ATAR is entirely data-driven. It's a rank, so if your results place you in the top percentile then you'll get the top ATAR.

Dr Rod Yager, Chair of the Technical Committee on Scaling, which is responsible for calculating ATARs, says recent commentary overlooks evidence that students who choose the more demanding maths and English options get higher ATARs than those who choose the easier options.

For instance, let's take a look at the students who were placed in the 80^th percentile in the 2013 NAPLAN numeracy tests. The students from this percentile group who went on to study Mathematics in the HSC had an average scaled score of 60.3 across their other subjects. The students from the same percentile group who chose to study Mathematics General had an average scaled score of 55.7 across their other subjects. The same phenomenon occurs with the 2013 NAPLAN literacy scores and choice of English subject.*

Dr Yager believes this illustrates that there are many factors which are far more important in determining student success than subject choice. ‘The support and encouragement that students receive from their teachers, schools and families to pursue the more demanding options, together with their own desire to be challenged and well prepared for their future, are the real keys to better outcomes.'

Dr Yager says that the recent ATAR debate has failed to acknowledge why scaling is important and necessary. ‘Universities have an obligation to ensure that government-funded places in the courses they offer are given to the most able students. Scaling allows a fair comparison to be made between students who have studied different combinations of courses. To put this in perspective, in 2017, the 57,061 students who were eligible for an ATAR studied 27,546 different combinations of subjects. So scaling is necessary to allow us to make fair comparisons between students with different combinations of subjects and provide a reliable ranking.'

Kim Paino, UAC's General Manager of Marketing and Engagement, draws on a sporting analogy to explain the scaling process. ‘Parents understand that if their son or daughter comes first at the school swimming carnival it doesn't necessarily mean they're destined for Olympic gold. There could be a better swimmer at another school,' says Ms Paino. ‘The same can be said of the student who tops Physics in their school. To get a clearer picture of their academic performance we have to compare their results to that of all the other students at all the other schools.'

And to those students still convinced they can game the ATAR, Dr Yager has this to say, ‘The big advantages come from being prepared to make the choice to travel the more difficult path, trusting that the hard work this requires will be rewarded, not just in a higher ATAR, but also in a better preparation for the challenges and opportunities of life beyond the HSC.'

The wide, easy road rarely leads to the summit.'

NAPLAN success brings high praise for our staff and students!

Springwood High School's outstanding results in NAPLAN in 2017 have received the highest praise. The Department of Education's senior leader for school performance, Mr Murat Dizdar (Deputy Secretary, School Operations and Performance), has written with his congratulations to staff and students for their "high performance" and "exemplary gains". The CEO of ACARA, the body which runs national assessments, has written to praise and congratulate our school community for results that are "significant and worthy of highlighting and acknowledging." Great news and well done to our students, families and teachers.

CSC to continue in 2019 and beyond

Students are at the centre of our decision making in delivering high level public education at Springwood High School. An evaluation process for the Combined Senior Curriculum (CSC) at SHS has concluded with the principal resolving that the CSC will continue into the future.

A point of positive agreement among all stakeholders— teachers, students and parents—is that the CSC had provided increased subject choice and flexibility for senior students. This was a foundational principle for establishing the CSC: to secure an enhanced capacity to offer students the broadest possible range and largest possible number of subjects, thereby meeting their learning needs and interests to the fullest possible extent and enhancing their post-school options. Of course, this is congruent with the fundamental moral purpose of schooling and therefore every government school in NSW, including SHS.

Some positives that students have experienced in the CSC were adroitly summarised in remarks made during the evaluation: "it's been effective in that regard, a lot more subjects that are run because of this system"; "I think it's better because you focus only on three in one year and then three the next so you can focus on them continuously"; "I have friends in the other system who wish that they were doing it this way".

HSC Minimum Standard & Yr 9 NAPLAN Change

CHANGES TO THE HSC MINIMUM STANDARD & NAPLAN

The requirements to meet the HSC Minimum Standard have been simplified under a change announced by Education Minister Rob Stokes.

Following detailed consultation over the past 12 months, results for Year 9 NAPLAN tests will no longer be linked to the minimum standard of numeracy and literacy for the HSC.

Mr Stokes said that the introduction of a minimum standard to receive the HSC from 2020 was a reform that had widespread support, ensuring all students who receive the HSC have the literacy and numeracy skills needed to succeed in life after school. However, he recognised the link of this standard to Year 9 NAPLAN tests placed unnecessary pressure on Year 9 students. "NAPLAN should be a simple check-up, not a major operation. It is one tool used to assess educational progress – not a high stakes test," Mr Stokes said. "Allowing students to demonstrate the HSC minimum standard early with their Year 9 NAPLAN scores inadvertently transformed NAPLAN into a high stakes test."

Mr Stokes expressed his gratitude to teachers, parents and school communities for their feedback over the past year.

All HSC students will now meet the HSC minimum standard through short online tests in reading, writing and numeracy. Tests can be taken in Years 10, 11 or 12, in a process similar to obtaining the NSW Learner Drivers Licence.

"These tests are available for students to take anytime their teachers think they are ready, removing the stress and protecting the value of the HSC," Mr Stokes said.

NSW Education Standards Authority CEO David de Carvalho supports the change. "The NSW Government's decision has removed a complicating aspect of the policy that was causing concern about the purpose of NAPLAN," Mr de Carvalho said.

The change does not affect current Year 10 students.

Springwood High School takes pride in its Faulconbridge location and the connection to Sir Henry Parkes placing it at the heart of public education.

"We are a public comprehensive school, and proud to be comprehensive in advancing our students' learning, wellbeing and possibilities in life," says principal Dr Mark Howie. "This is evident in our 2017 HSC results and other recent exciting news. We applaud the achievements of students in the HSC and the full scope of school life."

Individual highlights include two students being recognised as ‘Top Achievers' by the NSW Educational Standards Authority. Tahlia Curley placed 5^th in the state in French Beginners and Charlotte Hitchcock placed 16^th in the state in Mathematics. Tahlia received a mark of 99 in French Beginners, and Charlotte gained a mark of 100 in Mathematics.

The school received 24 mentions on the Distinguished Achievers List, encompassing the achievements of 18 students across 10 subjects, which attests to the range and depth of students' achievements across the curriculum.

The school's 3+3 Compacted Curriculum model for HSC delivery means the top and distinguished achievers may have been completing their first or their second year of HSC exams. Completing her first three subjects and exams, Tahlia achieved three Band 6 results, meaning she received marks of 90 or more in all of her subjects this year. Catherine Schweinsberg was completing her final two HSC courses and achieved Band 6 results in both.

At the time of writing, outstanding ATAR scores of which we have been informed were achieved by Zachary Mann, 96.45; Luke Simson, 91.15; Alexandrine Curtis, 90.55; and Catherine Schweinsberg, 90.4. More information may follow in coming days.

Dr Howie said that Springwood High students have also been publicly recognised in a notable way for their achievements in recent times. "This attests to the uplifting possibilities available to students through public education and Springwood High."

Elite athlete Jackson Sharp, who was also completing his first three HSC courses and exams this year, finished 4th in the 1500m at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas in July. Jackson has since been awarded a CHS Blue, the highest award for sport in NSW public schools. In addition, the Sydney West School Sport Association awarded him Blues for Athletics and Cross Country, the President's Award for achieving two Blues, and the Premier's Sporting Scholarship.

Year 10 student Jessica Johnson, a proud young Wiradjuri woman, has been recognised by Adam Goodes, Michael O'Loughlin and the Board of the GO Foundation, being awarded The GO Foundation Scholarship. This will support Jessica in her education, and help her to further develop her leadership skills.

Year 9 student Ella Newton, also a proud young Aboriginal woman, has been awarded the Harding Miller Education Foundation scholarship supporting girls of high potential. This will support Ella's educational achievements and career aspirations.

"Our best wishes go to our students as they move to the next stages in their lives," said Dr Howie. "Our students are well-equipped for further study, the workforce, and for facing the challenges of their life goals and ambitions."

50th Anniversary Celebrations

Parents, students, staff and former students and staff attended the school's 50^th Anniversary celebrations.

A function was held at the school, Grose Rd, Faulconbridge, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm on Friday, December 8. This attending received were able to take souvenir photos, and received a commemorative booklet, light refreshments and entertainment.

On Saturday, December 9, the school held an open day from 10am to 2pm. Visitors could explore archive displays of the school's history through the decades or sit in on modern lessons to experience how school and teaching has changed during the past 50 years.

An enjoyable time was had by all. There were plenty of smiles, much reminiscing and some good stories.

The present principal, Dr Mark Howie, emphasised the significance of the anniversary for current and future staff and students. He said that to recognise and applaud the history of the school, its proud achievements and all of the talented and dedicated people —students, staff, parents and community members—who collectively have brought these about over the decades, presents those here now with an inheritance. And with this comes a significant and humbling responsibility: the inherited task of proudly carrying forward the heritage that all present at the anniversary celebration had helped to create, preserving and enlarging it as we create and move into the future.

Mathematics Faculty 2018 Update

We have seen some exciting changes and excellent results.in the Mathematics Faculty over the past few years. However, we are always looking for further ways to improve what we do.

We have developed a plan for some changes in the coming year that allows more conformity across classes, as well as obtaining the best results for our students. They have been set out below.

In all year 7-10 classes, for the same pathway will receive the same homework weekly. The students will receive them on the following days and the homework will be due the following week on the same day the next homework is handed out.
- Year 10 Thursday
- Year 9 Tuesday
- Year 8 Friday
In year 7-10 all reports will also include a working mathematically outcome. The outcome will include communication, techniques and using correct notation. This outcome will be determined by the following components
- Bookwork mark twice a semester
- Effort in lessons
- Homework submitted
All notes, homework, assessment notifications and resources will be put onto Google Classroom. This is a site the students can access from their portal. Only students in the course/pathway will be included in the site. These resources will be available for all students completing a course, regardless of the class they are in.

One other issue the Mathematics Faculty has identified is the change of the top students from year 8 to year 10. In year 8 the break-up of boys and girls is even in year 8, while there are mainly boys in the top year 11 and 12 Mathematical courses.

A study completed by Sydney University found the students of Mathematics who are the most confident are ranked in the following descending order: Girls in single sex settings; boys in single sexed settings; boys in co-educational settings; lastly girls in coeducational settings. Following this research, we are trialling a top boys and girls class in year 9 this year only for the 5.3 pathway. This will be assessed for success at the end of the year. We will evaluate the progress of this class structure at the end of first semester and we welcome your thoughts on this trial as the term unfolds.

WSU Early Offer Program

Western Sydney University is now offering students a chance to apply for an early offer based on HSC subject band outcomes, instead of the ATAR.

Students who apply for the early offer program will receive an early offer for entry to a degree, based on corresponding HSC subject band outcomes. WSU believe this is fairer, knowing that students who do well in their subjects at school, can go on to do well at University.

Offers will be made on December 14 - the same day HSC results are released, and a full day before ATARs are released. It's also earlier than any UAC offer rounds based on HSC outcomes.

Applications will be open to 2017 NSW HSC Students. They can register their interest to receive information from Western Sydney University about the HSC True Reward early offer program and to be informed when applications open.

Young Archie’s Competition

Within the Creative and Performing Arts we are always looking for students to connect with the world outside the classroom. This year as an extension to the Year 7 Visual Arts program focussed on portraiture and identity, students will be encouraged and supported through classwork to enter their portraits in the Young Archie Competition run by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

The competition provides an exciting option to artists between the ages of 5 and 18, and is a part of the galleries family-focused activities for the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2017 exhibition. The portrait should be of a person who is special to them – someone who is known to them and plays a significant role in their life.

There are four age categories:
•5-8 year olds •9-12 year olds •13-15 year olds •16-18 year olds

The competition will be judged by the Art Gallery of NSW's community engagement manager Victoria Collings, and a guest judge, based on merit and originality. Five finalists from each category will be exhibited at the Gallery and on the Gallery website. One winner will be chosen in each category. Artworks that receive an honourable mention will be displayed on the Gallery website and at the SH Ervin Gallery in the Rocks alongside the Salon des Refusés.

Entering the competition

•One artwork only per entrant.
•Any art materials may be used but the artwork must be two-dimensional and on good-quality paper so it can be framed for display if selected.
•Must be no smaller than A4 (210 × 297 mm), no bigger than A3 (420 × 297 mm) and no thicker than 1cm.
•Can be vertical or horizontal.
Please ask the Visual Arts teachers for advice, technical support or help with competition entry. Students from any year are invited to enter their work.

'Hallelujah'

Those who were lucky enough to attend last nights Acoustic Night, were treated to 29 outstanding performances by some of Springwood's most talented musicians. Special thanks goes to Jack Maidment and Chris Mallas for their passion and organisation of the event. It was fantastic to see so many students both selecting and executing a diverse range of thought provoking and emotional songs from so many different genres.

Last nights audience all walked out of the hall singing 'Hallelujah' which with the closing number lead by Chris and Jack, but accompanied by all of the nights performers, as they paid tribute the the late Leonard Cohen. A performance that will live long in the memories of all who attended.

A special mention must go to Ms van Kessel for he assistance with the event, maintaining the focus on student leadership established by Ms West back in 2009, as well as the technical and musical support of Ms Freitag, Mr Herne, John Grimshaw, William Goodwin. Lucas Pedley, Lachlan Grimshaw and Mika Carr.

Unfortunately this year in NSW there have been two separate occasions where students have been injured by a car after alighting from their bus on the way home. Both students walked in front of the bus and into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

Thankfully neither student was seriously injured, however the situation could have been much worse.
The road safety message for all students is: wait until the bus has gone and then use a safe place to cross the road.

Help children to be cyber-smart

Social media use is common today in many people's lives. It can be a great way to stay in touch with friends and family. It also is also playing an increasingly important role in many workplaces. Businesses, corporations and other organisations now routinely use social media to promote their products or services, and also to seek feedback from clients and customers. An extension of this is that many workplaces now encourage employees to use social media networks as a way to collaborate and gain important information to assist them in effectively fulfilling their roles and responsibilities. In short, in this day and age it serves young people well to be informed, active, safe and responsible users of social media.

Cyber-safety is part of the curriculum is now and taught at school. However, for parents and teachers, concerning matters still arise from time to time to indicate inappropriate social media use by young people. This can be both a disciplinary matter at school and a legal matter involving the police.

It is therefore important that all students and their parents know and understand that inappropriate social media use can fall under criminal laws. In NSW, the relevant information on the Australian Government's e-safety website indicates that this particularly relates to social media use that takes the following forms: stalking or intimidation with intent to cause fear of physical or mental harm; sending or delivering a document containing threats to kill or inflict bodily harm; assaulting, stalking, harassing, intimidating fellow students while attending a school; common assault.

A wellbeing priority for our young people must be to ensure that they are not participating in inappropriate social media use and that they are not being subject to it by others. It is very important that schools and parents work closely in partnership to support young people in this regard. Schools may also work closely with the police in support of young people.

State and Federal police and Commonwealth authorities have power under section 313 of the Telecommunications Act which they may be able to use to help have material removed from some types of communications services, if having the material removed is for the purposes of enforcing the criminal law.

Please contact the school and the relevant authorities in a timely manner should you ever have any concerns about social media messages your child is receiving or accessing. We are very willing to help parents in the process of having social media messages and inappropriate social media pages and posts removed. Please also monitor your child's social media use to ensure that it is safe, responsible and legal.

Two years on …….what does bushfire recovery look like …………….

As we approach the 2^nd anniversary of the bushfires it is good to reflect on how our community is recovering and the ongoing impact this may have in our school communities.

One thing we know is that recovery is an individual process. For some people the fires may be having minimal effect on their lives now, for others it continues to have a significant impact. There can be psychological issues not only for those who experienced loss or had direct fire experience but for those who were isolated from loved ones and often imagined the worst. This was the case for many of our children who were in lock down at their schools who were safe but separated from their families. Recovery is an ongoing process for those people who work in the community who have shared the lived experience of the fires and experience informational and compassion fatigue.

The research shows that for many people the psycho-social recovery often takes many years.

Some of the reactions that are often seen and experienced at this stage of recovery are:

Irritability, frustration and decreased tolerance. Often evident by "not talking nicely".
Difficulties with decision making and problem solving.
Difficulty with memory and comprehending new information.
Feeling more vulnerable and experiencing anxiety on hot, windy days, when hearing sirens, seeing or smelling smoke.
Lack of energy, even for things that were previously fun.
General fatigue.
We can be more self-focussed when in survival mode and this can reduce connectedness and we may notice changes in relationships with family and friends.

During this time we need to notice that our values often change. People often reflect on what gives their life meaning as we look at how to build a basis for our future rather than a replacement of our past.

Take time to nurture relationships.
Take time out – freeing your mind helps creative thinking and allows you to get things into perspective.
Have a routine and set realistic goals. Give yourself time about making decisions
Maintain your health – good sleep, good food and good fun are important.
Use your pre-existing strengths – keep doing what you do well, this is a buffer against negative emotion and helps you feel energized.

Administering prescribed medication at school

Departmental policy and procedures require that when a medical practitioner has prescribed medication that must be administered during the school day, parents are responsible for:

· bringing this need to the attention of the school

· ensuring that the information is updated if it changes

· supplying the medication and any 'consumables' necessary for its administration in a timely way

· collaborating with the school in working out arrangements for the supply and administration of the prescribed medication.

Some key points to please remember:

· Parents of children who require prescribed medication to be administered at school must complete a written request. There is a departmental form for this that can be supplied by the school- please ask for it when required. If parents have difficulty in completing the form, they can also ask the school for assistance.

· Students must not carry medications unless there is a written agreement between the school and the student's parents that this is a planned part of the student's health care support.

National launch of Yellow Ribbon National Road Safety Week.

On Monday this week (May 4) the school captains, Georgia Uebergang and Nathan Harvey, and principal, Dr Mark Howie, joined students and school leaders from the Blue Mountains at the national launch of Yellow Ribbon National Road Safety Week. This important event, which was organised by Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH), was held in Springwood. The event's focus on road safety and protecting the lives of children and young people gave it local, national and international significance. The event theme was "Drive So Others Survive!" Australia's Yellow Ribbon National Road Safety Week is a registered event of the 2015.

UN Global Road Safety Week and reflects the UN theme of ‘Children and Road Safety'. The importance of community awareness, political action and educational programs in this area cannot be overemphasised. The Sydney Morning Herald published an article this week which indicates that by 2030, road traffic injuries will be the fifth leading cause of childhood death worldwide and the seventh leading cause of years lost to ill-health, disability or early death.

World's Greatest Shave

Springwood High School has taken part in the Leukaemia Foundation's World's Greatest Shave for several years. In 2013, a small group of students not only took part, they rose over $4,000 to support such a noble cause..

This year Springwood students are again taking part in the World's Greatest Shave, and and we are hoping to raise even more money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

To help, the SRC has organised a fundraising "Blue & Orange Mufti-Day" this Monday 30th March. Students can bring a gold coin donation and are encouraged to wear blue and orange, the colours of the Leukaemia Foundation.

In period 6 and lunch, clippers will be running hot when 12 students and teachers shave their heads during assembly.

Thank you to the friends and families who have supported the group of enthusiastic student who have raised thousands to support families impacted by leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or related blood disorders.

2014 HSC Results

Springwood High School applauds the ATAR scores of its high achieving students in 2014, including: Georgia Anson 93.65, Jake Gilliland 92.5, Rosaleen Cooney 90.5, Elana Andrews-Marney 89.75
Ben Simson 89.45 and Blake Staples 82.65. The school received 24 Band 6 results in 2014, demonstrating great consistency across its Senior Year 1 (SY1) and Senior Year 2 (SY2) cohorts within its vertical curriculum structure. SY1 students, completing their first HSC exams, achieved 13 Band 6 results; and 11 Band 6 results were achieved by SY2 students. Sophie Bellotti from SY1 remarkably scored 4 Band 6 results or equivalent, including an amazing score of 96 in her 3 subjects worth 2 units. SY2 student Rosemary Cooney scored Band 6 results in her 2 HSC subjects completed in 2014, Ancient History and Visual Arts. The Band 5 results across the 2 cohorts numbered 109. We are committed with our vertical curriculum structure to having a very diverse range of subjects and it's wonderful to see students doing so well in a wide range of subjects. This speaks volumes to their commitment, their dedication and to the talent of their teachers. Special recognition goes to students who have excelled in the Creative and Performing Arts. Samantha Egan was successfully accepted into the Callback 2014 Dance HSC performance showcase. In Drama, nominations for Onstage were received by Band 6 student Jai Johns for her individual and group performances. Congratulations go to students who have received early entry offers to university, including Dominic Bleijie and Eden Stubbs who have both been offered the opportunity to study theatre media at CSU.

2013 HSC Results

Springwood High School students matched it with the best in the state in the 2013 HSC. One student achieved a remarkable score of 99/100 in Drama, placing her 2^ndin the state. A male student was 7^thin the state in Studies of Religion and 9^thin the state in Ancient History. The HSC class of 2013 achieved 42 band 6 results (i.e. an HSC mark of 90/100) across 19 subjects. Outstanding university entry scores were achieved, including: 99.3, 99.1, 96.85, 95.2, 94.25 and 93.9.

Two cohorts of Springwood High School students completed HSC examinations in 2013: Year 12 and Senior Year 1. In the transition to the school's Combined Senior Curriculum, Senior Year 1 was the first group of Springwood High School students to complete the HSC following what the Board of Studies calls a vertical curriculum, in which 3 HSC subjects are completed in the first year of senior studies and a further 3 HSC subjects completed in the second year. Student success came in a broad range of subjects, reflecting the diverse curriculum on offer to students at Springwood High School. In total, 42 band 6 results (i.e. an HSC mark of 90/100 or above) were achieved in 19 subjects.

2012 HSC Results

Springwood High School's HSC class of 2012 continued the school's tradition of academic success. Twenty individual Band 6 results (i.e. an HSC mark of 90/100 or greater) were awarded, ranging across 7 subjects. Subject highlights included 4 Band 6 results being awarded in Ancient History, 3 in French Beginners and 3 in Industrial Technology. In 6 of the 7 subjects in which Springwood High School students achieved Band 6 results, the relative percentage awarded exceeded that for all students in NSW. The outstanding individual performer achieved 3 Band 6 results and 2 high Band 5 results. 106 Band 5 results were awarded to Springwood High School students. In Textiles and Design, 83% of students achieved an HSC mark of 80/100 or greater, exceeding the comparative state percentage by 37%. In French Beginners, 72% of students achieved an HSC mark of 80/100 or greater, exceeding the comparative state percentage by 25%.

Registration opened in December 2014 for Australia's biggest breast cancer research event, the annual Women in Super Mother's Day Classic. Every Mother's Day for the past 17 years, Australians have walked or run to fund research and honour those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

At the 2014 Mother's Day Classic more than 135,000 participants in 97 events around the nation and on overseas military bases raised $4.5 million, bringing the overall total raised to $24.3 million.

Our first meeting is a great opportunity to meet other parents, find out more about Springwood High School and we particularly welcome our new Year 7 parents and caregivers.
Being involved in the P & C Meeting is a great way to find out about what is coming up at the school and become actively involved. Each meeting our Principal, Mark Howie presents a report.

Our P & C is an active and friendly group which exists to benefit the school and our students. Being involved shows your children that school and their education is important. The issues and challenges of High School are different to Primary School-level but parent involvement is just as important.

BEING ME: FOUR CORNERS

There are any number of self help books that will tell you how to find yourself.

But what if truly being yourself involved changing your gender? Would you have the courage to do it?

Eleven-year-old Isabelle does. To the world she looked like a young boy. But she knew that she was really a girl, and a year ago she told her parents the way she felt.

This week Four Corners reporter Janine Cohen tells Isabelle's story and the story of the family, the doctor and ultimately the community that backed her decision to truly be herself.

Along the way we meet other people who've confronted the same feelings and discover that a growing and significant number of children are finding themselves in the same situation. Some find support from their parents and doctors. Others discover fear, prejudice and a legal system that doesn't make it easy for them to be themselves.

For Isabelle, the decision to tell her story was not made lightly. She and her parents tell Four Corners that they are willing to speak about their experience so that others won't feel alone and other transgender children can be helped and protected.

Doctors tell the program that trying to repress the feeling that you are trapped in the wrong body simply does not work. Instead, it can lead to self harm and even suicide.

Paediatricians also make it clear that timing is important. They explain that if children want to make a physical change, then treatment should begin at puberty. In that way, hormone treatments can be prescribed with far better results.

A senior judge tells Four Corners she is keen to see the law relating to transgender treatment tested sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, doctors and families warn the current legal situation is putting some children at risk.

Isabelle's story is remarkable and inevitably raises many questions for families, doctors and society in general. Ultimately though, it's a journey that shows courage and honesty is essential to triumph over ignorance. It's a story that is not to be missed.

Springwood High School P & C is once again hosting 'Celebrating Design Artisan Markets' on Saturday November 15th from 9 - 4pm. This successful fundraising event gives shoppers a great opportunity to buy local handmade goods in time for Christmas.

Volunteers are needed to help set up the Hall on Friday 14th at 2.45pm and/or help out on Saturday in the Café, admissions and sales.

The Café is also seeking donations of home baked goods to sell. Please include a list of all ingredients in donated goods.

From Tuesday the19th August, two qualified Youth Workers from Mountains Youth Services Team (MYST) will be making themselves available every week after lunch for any students who may need any additional support. Youth Workers are professionals who have been employed to help support young people in a range of situations, some of which may include sitting down and having an informal chat about any issues that may be arising at school, home or with friends. Youth Workers can also refer onto Counsellors and Case Workers who can help with further issues such as Housing, Centrelink and medium-long term case work. Students wishing to make an appointment to see Emilly and Leah can make contact with them in the quad during lunchtimes every Tuesday.

Springwood High School turns '13' in 2014

Turning 13 is a difficult time for everyone; would-be teenagers, their parents and their teachers! Following on from the outstanding success of ‘The Wedding Singer' in 2012, Springwood High School remembers the formative years by presenting ‘13', a new broadway musical composed by Jason Robert Brown. ‘13' follows the story of Evan Goldman, and his transition from the middle of Manhattan to Appleton, Indiana. Trying to fit in, Evan latches onto the popular kids, only to learn important lessons about being true to yourself.

In addition to the cast of 80 students from Springwood High School, staff and students have composed an entirely original companion story titled ‘12', to be performed by students from Faulconbridge and Springwood public schools. ‘12' examines the lead characters of ‘13' and their transitions to high school.

‘13' promises to be an outstanding evening of performance from a cast of 150 local students in years 4-12. Memorial Service - Michael Ryall

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

I am writing to you with some sad news about a member of our school community. One of our senior students, Michael Ryall, died in accidental circumstances on 23^rd April. Michael was held in the highest regard by his teachers and by his peers. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathy are with Michael's family and friends.

Michael's family has informed us that a memorial service will be held at the Salvation Army Hall in Francis Rd., Faulconbridge at 1pm on Thursday, 1^st May. In order to allow staff and students to attend the service it is necessary to make some changes to a previously notified school event and to our normal school routine for this day.

1. The student recognition ceremony that was to take place on Thursday, 1^st May, will now take place on Monday, 12^th May. The ceremony for Years 10 – 12 will take place in lessons 3 and 4 (10.10 am-11.15 am). The ceremony for Years 7-9 will take place in lessons 5 and 6 (11.25 am-12.30 pm).

2. Minimal and appropriate supervision arrangements will be in place at school on Thursday, 1^st May, during lessons 6 to 8 (11.55am-2.45pm).

3. It is desirable that students who wish to attend the memorial service for Michael be accompanied by and have the support of a parent or another adult family member. Given the heightened emotions that students are likely to be experiencing, parents may wish for their child to travel to the service directly from home, rather than first attending school. If you wish to do this, it would be appreciated if you could notify the school your child will be absent on Thursday so staff do not become concerned about their absence. Students in Years 10 – 12 who do attend school before leaving for the service will be able to sign out of school for the rest of the day (following the usual procedure with the front office) at the start of lesson 6 and upon receipt of a signed permission slip (see over). Students in Years 7-9 wishing to attend the service, making their way there to and from school, will need to return a signed permission slip (see over). These students will also need to be signed out from school and accompanied to the service by a parent or other nominated adult, as indicated on the returned permission slip. If you have concerns or questions about these arrangements, please contact Ms Dean (Years 10-12) or Mrs Hume (Years 7-9).

As you would understand there is tremendous upset and sadness within our whole school community. Some students have reacted very visibly. Others have not. This does not mean that at some time in the future it will not affect them. I am particularly concerned that some students may experience a reaction at home. Should this occur, and in any case, you might want to consider contacting your own general practitioner or community health service to assist you. Some children may prefer to talk to someone they don't know about how they are feeling. Whether or not your son or daughter talks with you about what has happened, please let them know they can also see our school counsellor or contact Kids Helpline (1800 551 800 or www.kidshelp.com.au) or Lifeline (131114 or www.lifeline.org.au), and talk about how they are feeling.

Our school will be concentrating on supporting our students and staff over the next months. This means, among other things, returning the school to normal routines as soon as possible and recognising that students can be affected by this event for many months to come. If your son/daughter is already using the services of a mental health professional, you should ensure this information is passed on to that professional.

The staff of Springwood High School was greatly saddened to learn of the death of Michael Ryall, one of our Year 12 students, on Wednesday 23 April 2014. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathy are with Michael's family and friends.

Michael was held in the highest regard by his teachers and his peers. His friendly, outgoing character endeared him to others. Michael involved himself in the life of the school in a positive and constructive manner, readily lending a helping hand to anyone in need. He was always polite, respectful and concerned about the wellbeing of those around him. He was, as the Australian vernacular would have it, a "dinkum" young man.

Students return to school for Term 2 on Tuesday, 29/4/13. Procedures are in place to provide additional support to our students and staff in the coming week. We will continue to concentrate on providing support to students and staff over the next months.

Variations to Normal School Routine on Monday, 7/4/14

Dear parents and carers,

The teachers and staff of Springwood High School were saddened to learn this week of the sudden passing of Mr Jeffrey Hume, the husband of our esteemed colleague and friend, Mrs Jodie Hume. Many of us will be showing our support and respect for Mrs Hume and her family by attending the memorial service for her husband on Monday, 7/4/14. This will necessitate certain variations to the normal routine of the school on this day, as described below.

* Combined Senior Curriculum students will not have normal lessons in periods 5 and 6. They will instead undertake individual study at this time, under the supervision of teachers remaining at school. Students will be divided between the library, the connected classroom and other designated classrooms in Martin Block.

* Year 8 students will not have normal lessons in periods 3 and 4. Students will participate in activities, under the supervision of staff remaining at school, on the basketball courts and adjoining passive area of the playground. In the event of bad weather, the students will move to the covered area near Chapman block.

We have endeavoured to minimise the disruption to students in determining the arrangements for supervision. Beyond the changes outlined above, normal classes will run throughout the remainder of the day for CSC students and Year 8. Year 9 classes will run as normal for the entire day. The Year 7 Camp and Year 10 Study Skills Day will take place as planned.

School Play: HATE IS NOT A LARAMIE VALUE.

Sixteen years ago, a 21 year old named Matthew Shepard from Laramie, Wyoming in mid-west America, was bashed to death for being gay. This event in a small town, an otherwise inconsequential, ordinary part of America, became a touchstone that circulated around the world and focused significant attention upon homophobic hate crimes and gay rights in general.

The death of Matthew Shepard and the events that ensued enraged, touched and even created understanding within people's hearts. In the months after Matthew's death, members of the Tectonic Theatre Company based in New York came to Laramie and, over a 12 month period, conducted hundreds of interviews with people from the town. These interviews were transcribed and formulated into a play called THE LARAMIE PROJECT. Using the words of real people, the play seeks to examine what happened in Laramie, Wyoming and the extraordinary impact that the death of one young man had upon the town, and indeed across the whole of America and beyond.
Springwood High School Theatre Company is proud to present THE LARAMIE PROJECT for the school community. It will be performed by our senior Drama students. The students have been working with great dedication and passion on the production and are looking forward to sharing this important story with their audiences.

Year 10 Study Skills Days

Year 10 will have the opportunity to participate in three skill days over the course of this year. The aim of each day is to prepare Year 10 for the rigours of Senior School and to practically support them in developing effective study skills.

The students will learn about:

General study skills for all subjects
How to study for maths
Fitness, food and relaxation for academic success
Preparing for exams
Maintaining a car
Smart Earning- vital information students need to make their first job count
Essay writing
Responding effectively to short answer questions
Motivation and goal-setting

The days will be during school hours, at school and all students will be expected to attend. There will be a cost associated with the day as guest speakers and presenters have been invited to attend. Safe crossing of the Great Western Highway

Extension of Fire Protection Zone

Some great news. The DEC has agreed to improve and extend our Fire Protection Zone. Contractors will be employed to carry out this work in the near future. I have therefore cancelled the working bee scheduled for 23/11/13. Once the major work has been completed we will reassess the situation then.

HSC students and parents,

I hope things have settled for you at home. School is getting back to normal and thankfully without any damage from the fires.

The BOS will be holding a community meeting AFTER the HSC exams are over to explain to students and parents the processes for our students concerning the exams and to answer any questions. I will let you know the date when it has been determined. I strongly recommend you attend if you can. The meeting will be open for all high schools directly impacted and I have offered our hall as a venue.

Information re Misadventure forms.

As I have mentioned earlier, I will be submitting group misadventures for the exams. There will be a number of individuals who also need to submit a personal misadventure form. Any student who did not attend an exam or feel they were more greatly impacted upon by the circumstances of the last week are asked to phone the school or come in to fill in the form. If you are not sure if individual misadventure applies to you, please call to check. Mr Howie and I are trying to phone everyone but your assistance would be appreciated. Mr Howie is looking after SY1 and I am looking after year 12.

Remember your first priority is to prepare for the exams that are coming up. We have the next week or so to get all the paperwork finished so don't stress about it at this stage. If you missed an exam because you were sick, remember you need a medical certificate for the day.

Cancer Assistance Network in the Blue Mountains

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

I am writing to you on behalf of a local branch of The Cancer Assistance Network in the Blue Mountains. I was contacted by them recently asking me to forward information about their services to local school communities in the Blue Mountains.

Blue Mountains Can Assist is one of over 50 branches of The Cancer Assistance Network which has operated in non-metropolitan NSW for over 50 years.

Can Assist's mission is to assist people affected by cancer and their families by providing financial assistance and through the provision of Viva Community Care Packages.

The Viva packages are tailored to meet a person's individual situation. On average a Viva package will offer a few hours of care each week for a short term to get people through the difficult period of treatment or as they are recovering from therapy. This could include such things as nursing, transport, child care, domestic help and respite care.

The Blue Mountains Branch has a small active membership of volunteers who raise money locally in order to support local people.

Springwood High Students Represent Australia with Distinction

On Thursday 6 September, Springwood High School took part in the 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Main Study. International assessments provide a wide range of valuable information for education policy and review in Australia and overseas, and also enable Australia to consider the performance of our education system compared with others.

Since the first PISA assessment involving 32 countries in 2000, the survey has continued to raise interest amongst educators and policy-makers world-wide. In 2012, Australia will be one of almost 70 countries participating in PISA with over 15 000 students (from more than 800 schools) representing our country.Twenty seven students from Years 9 to 11, randomly selected in a process administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), were involved in the testing.

The test administrator, working on behalf of ACER, was full of praise for the exemplary manner in which our students both behaved and applied themselves. They all represented the school in the best possible manner. Each participating student has played an important role in representing all students in Australia, and has also made a valuable contribution to the education community both nationally and internationally.

Learning Hub for Aboriginal Students

Springwood High School has received funding to set up an Independent Learning Hub for Aboriginal students. The aim of the Independent Learning Hub is to enhance research skills and improve the quality of students' homework and completion rates of assignments.

Students will be supervised by a teacher(s) who is employed as a qualified tutor.

The aim of the Learning Hub is very similar to that of a homework centre where students are supported in their learning. This means that students in years 7 – 10 can access the support of qualified tutors after school hours to help them with school work and further develop their numeracy and literacy skills. Students will have access to computers and other learning resources.

The Learning Hub will operate in the school library. It is hoped that the Hub will commence operation during week three of this term.The hours of operation will be from 3.00 pm to 4.00pm, twice a week, although this may be increased with further demand. It is also expected that the Hub will operate to support students well into 2103.

If any community member is interested in paid work as a qualified or unqualified tutor, they should contact Mr Burnitt, the Deputy Principal, at the school on 4751 2111.

Student shines in state wide reconciliation project.

Springwood High School artwork has been selected from more than 1000 entries to be exhibited at the Australian Museum in Sydney in a Reconciliation themed show. The project, fun by the NSW Reconciliation Council, encourages students to creatively express their ideas about reconciliation.

Leanne Townsend, CEO NSW Reconciliation Council, said "The response we received from young people was unprecedented. Using the theme Our Place, young people explored reconciliation in a highly mature way."

Selected artwork in the Challenge hails from more than 100 schools across NSW. One of the winning student entries was painted by Murrandah Hampton in Year 8.

The exhibition of winning works will remain on show at the Australian Museum until August, and is free to view.

Four Springwood High School students were recently announced winners of the iDrinksmart education project, a joint initiative between MYST – Moutains Youth Services Team and BMWHRC – Blue Mountains Womens Health and Resoure Centre. The project aimed at producing digital media to address issues of high risk alcohol consumption.

Teams of students from local high schools attended health information sessions and were trained in video production on iphones. They then produced two 30 second films that conveyed the message that ‘Binge drinking is never okay'.

The winning video from Springwood High School was produced by Maddie Rapley, Cameron McCormack, Tom Hearn and Erin Schloeffel. The primary message was about the safety of young women in a situation involving alcohol. Judges particularly commented on the film making techniques employed including effective use of headers and jump cuts.

‘We found the project challenging', commented Erin, ‘ particularly fitting the message into such a short time frame but we were very pleased with the result'. Many agreed, with the video being voted the best by internet viewers.

Shave for a Cure 2012

Springwood High School has once again supported the World's Greatest Shave which raises money for the Leukemia Foundation. Organised by the SRC, under the direction of school captain, Jonathan Roe, nine senior students volunteered to have their heads shaved under the watchful eye of Nathalie Samson from Rod's Hair Shoppe, Penrith. One of the students, Jack Aubrey, whose hair measured 45 cm, had special attention paid to his cut as his hair was then donated to ‘Tresses for Princesses', an organisation which provides wig makers with hair to be made into wigs for sufferers of alopecia.

Clean Up Australia 2012

Springwood High School participated in the 2012 Clean Up Australia Day by volunteering to clean up the school surrounds. Armed with rubber gloves and yellow clean up bags, students and staff made quick work beautifying the paths and gardens that surround the school. The school would like to thank all those involved on the day.

Aboriginal Artists in Blue Mountains Schools Project

Springwood High School recently participated in the Aboriginal Artists in Blue Mountains Schools Project organised by the Mountains Outreach Community Service. Graeme King, local Aboriginal artist, lead the workshop starting with a number of aboriginal stories before introducing the theme of ‘Our Place' for the painting. Students will be invited to submit their finished artworks to the Schools Reconciliation Challenge, organised by the NSW Reconciliation Council, and these works will go on display at a number of galleries throughout Sydney and the Blue Mountains.
