Creative arts

In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts.

Studying the creative arts, students learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform. Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.

Students must study 100 hours of both music and visual arts during Years 7 to 10. They also have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in other art forms through elective subjects including drama, dance, photography and visual design. Students can then select from a range of courses in Years 11 to 12.

Enjoying strong ties with the vibrant artistic community of the Blue Mountains, Springwood High School has historically had a significant focus on the creative and performing arts. This is an area in which the school has been highly innovative and has experienced considerable success.

Students achieved outstanding results at a state level in Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama in 2020, despite a significantly challenging year. Student work was displayed at ArtExpress, and four students were shortlisted for Encore (NSW HSC Music Showcase), one student was shortlisted for OnStage (NSW HSC Drama Showcase) and one student had three performances shortlisted for Callback (NSW HSC Dance Showcase). These impressive achievements make Springwood High School a centre of excellence in the creative and performing arts.

The creative and performing arts at Springwood High School bring together experienced and passionate teachers, parents and school community members dedicated to promoting performance and arts education for all interested students.

Springwood High School annually showcases student performances in Music, Dance and Drama. Students have opportunities to perform in productions and the bi-annual school musicals. The Dance ensembles perform in regional dance festivals, and Dance students have also performed at the NSW Schools Spectacular in elite featured ensembles.

Students have contributed to the Springwood Art Show, with a significant display of student works in recent years.

The school hall is equipped with professional sound and lighting equipment that enhances student skills in theatre production
