Languages

In NSW high schools, languages is a key learning area.

Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.

Why study a foreign language ?

-       It is a passport to the world

-       It will make you more employable

-       It will improve your analytical skills

-       It will assist your knowledge of English

Junior School

The study of language is compulsory for 100 hours in one continuous school year from Year 7 to Year 10, and at Springwood students undertake this study in Year 7 through the study of either French or Japanese.

Senior School

In the Senior school, NSW schools offer a wide variety of languages, catering for beginning students to background speakers.

The Languages Other Than English (LOTE) offered in the senior school at Springwood High School are French Beginners and Japanese Beginners. These languages are offered in alternate years and students have an opportunity to study both languages if they wish.

Other languages such as German, Italian and Spanish, can be studied in Stage 5 and 6 through our distance Education program. Students wishing to undertake these programs will need to participate in a thorough consultation process with LOTE teacher, Deputy Principal and student advisors before selecting these subjects. These courses are reserved for highly motivated, independent learners.
